Worum geht es?

Seit den 1960er Jahren hat die Künstlerin Füsun Onur eine eigene, originelle Bildsprache entwickelt und immer wieder neue Materialien und Ansätze in ihr Repertoire aufgenommen. Mit ihnen experimentierte sie, um anrührende Werke von zarter skulpturaler Intelligenz zu schaffen. In ihrem Vortrag geht die Kuratorin Defne Ayas ausführlicher auf Onurs konzeptionelle und minimalistische Praxis ein, insbesondere ihre Verwendung ephemerer Materialien als Akt des Widerstands, der bis in die Gegenwart nachhallt.

What is it about?

Since the 1960s, artist Füsun Onur has created an original visual language of her own, continuously introducing new materials and approaches to her repertoire with which she experimented as to create moving works with tender sculptural intelligence.

Defne Ayas ist eine türkisch-niederländische Kuratorin, die für ihre Arbeit an der Schnittstelle von zeitgenössischer Kunst, Live-Werken und politischen Prozessen bekannt ist. Sie war als Direktorin, Co-Direktorin, Kuratorin, Vorstandsmitglied und kuratorische Beraterin für mehrere Kulturinstitutionen und Forschungsinitiativen auf der ganzen Welt tätig, darunter das Melly (vormals Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art) (2012–2017) und Arthub Asia (2007–2011). Als gefragte Kuratorin bei Biennalen hat sie 2021 die 13. Gwangju Biennale (mit Natasha Ginwala), 2015 die 6. Moskauer Biennale und 2012 die 11. baltische Triennale mitkuratiert.
Ayas ist seit der Gründung von Performa 2005 in New York als Curator-at-large für die Organisation tätig, an der sie kürzlich eine Reihe von Performances mit dem Titel Protest and Performance: A Way of Life (2023) gezeigt hat. Ihr jüngstes Projekt mit dem türkischstämmigen armenisch-französischen Künstler Sarkis, mit dem sie Respiro im Türkischen Pavillon der 56. Biennale von Venedig 2015 präsentierte, ist bis Februar 2024 in der Kunsthalle Baden-Baden zu sehen.

Defne Ayas is a Turkish-Dutch curator known for her work at the intersection of contemporary art, live work, and political processes. She has served as a director, co-director, curator, board member and curatorial advisor to several cultural institutions and research initiatives across the world, including Melly (formerly known as Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art) (2012-2017) and Arthub Asia (2007-2011). As a coveted curator in biennale circuits, she has co-curated the 13th Gwangju Biennale (w/ Natasha Ginwala) in 2021, the 6th Moscow Biennale in 2015 and 11th Baltic Triennale in 2012.  Ayas remains a curator at large at Performa in New York since its inception in 2005, where she recently presented a series of performances titled Protest and Performance: A Way of Life (2023). Her latest endeavor with Turkish-born Armenian-French artist Sarkis, with whom she presented Respiro at the Pavillion of Turkey in 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, is on view at Kunsthalle Baden-Baden until February 2024.
