2024 wird die Londoner National Gallery 200 Jahre alt. Als sie 1824 vom Parlament gegründet wurde, segelte sie im Windschatten aufklärerischer Ideen vom sozialen und erzieherischen Nutzen öffentlicher Museen. Im Laufe der Zeit hat sie sich zu einer Schatzkammer der europäischen Malerei und zu einem Wahrzeichen Londons, zu einem Magneten für den internationalen Tourismus und zu einem Zentrum für Spitzenforschung in den Materialwissenschaften entwickelt. Heute präsentiert sie Ausstellungen, die von Zehntausenden von Menschen besucht werden, und versucht, entlegene Winkel der kunsthistorischen Landschaft zu erkunden. Die National Gallery ist das einzige nationale Museum für historische Malerei, das in seinem Gebäude ein Atelier für praktizierende Künstler*innen und ein angeschlossenes digitales Labor beherbergt. Ein zentrales Anliegen ist die gemeinsame Nutzung der Sammlungen und die Weitergabe von Fachwissen zum Nutzen der Öffentlichkeit. Angesichts des nahenden Jubiläums der National Gallery wird Gabriele Finaldi erörtern, warum diese Anliegen so wichtig sind; außerdem wird er die Herausforderungen aufzeigen, denen sich die Gallery an der Schwelle zum dritten Jahrhundert ihres Bestehens stellen muss.

• Gabriele Finaldi ist seit August 2015 Direktor der National Gallery in London. Von 2002 bis 2015 war er stellvertretender Direktor für Sammlungen und Forschung am Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Zwischen 1992 und 2002 arbeitete er als Kurator an der National Gallery, wo er für die italienischen Gemälde [CK1] der Sammlung (Caravaggio bis Canaletto) und die spanische Sammlung (Bermejo bis Goya) zuständig war. Finaldi studierte Kunstgeschichte am Courtauld Institute of Art, wo er 1995 über den in Italien tätigen spanischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts Jusepe de Ribera promovierte. Er hat Ausstellungen in Großbritannien, Spanien, Italien, Belgien und den USA kuratiert und Kataloge und wissenschaftliche Artikel über Velázquez und Zurbarán, die italienische Malerei des Barock sowie religiöse Ikonographie verfasst.

In 2024 the National Gallery will be two hundred years old. Founded by Parliament in the slipstream of Enlightenment ideas of the social and educational benefits of public museums, it has become over time a treasure house of European painting as well as a London landmark; a magnet for international tourism as well as a centre for high level research in the material sciences. It hosts exhibitions visited by tens of thousands of people and also seeks to explore remote corners of the art historical landscape. It is the only national museum of historic painting that has a practising artist’s studio in the building as well as an attached digital laboratory. Central to its purpose is the sharing of the collections and expertise for the benefit of the public. As the National Gallery approaches its Bicentenary, Gabriele Finaldi will discuss why this matters and identifies the challenges the Gallery faces on the threshold of the third century of its existence.

• Gabriele Finaldi has been Director of the National Gallery since August 2015. He was previously Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid, a position he took up in 2002. Prior to his role at the Prado, he was a curator at the National Gallery between 1992 and 2002, where he was responsible for the later Italian paintings in the collection (Caravaggio to Canaletto) and the Spanish collection (Bermejo to Goya). Finaldi studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art, where he completed his doctorate in 1995 on the 17th-century Spanish painter who worked in Italy Jusepe de Ribera. He has curated exhibitions in Britain, Spain, Italy, Belgium and the US. He has written catalogues and scholarly articles on Velázquez and Zurbarán, Italian Baroque painting, religious iconography.
